Configure a standard access point safely

Set up TP-Link, Omada, Wavlink, or another supported AP without presenting WiFi-only hardware as a voucher gateway.

Before you start

  • Connect to the same LAN or factory WiFi as the AP.
  • Identify the upstream router or hotspot gateway.
  • Confirm whether the AP is standalone or controller-managed.

Procedure

Follow these steps in order

1

Complete local initialization

Set the country, time, administrator password, operating mode, and management address. Avoid a factory reset once the AP is in customer service.

2

Choose AP or bridge mode

When an upstream router provides DHCP, routing, and hotspot access, use AP or bridge mode so the AP does not create a second NAT or conflicting DHCP server.

3

Set WiFi name and security

Enter the customer SSID and password, or choose open WiFi only when the upstream hotspot gateway enforces login. Reboot once and confirm the settings persist.

4

Add the AP to its branch

Record the vendor, model, MAC or serial, management address, upstream gateway, and physical location in the correct K7abeer branch.

5

Use capability-aware controls

Standard AP controls manage WiFi and inventory. Generate or enforce vouchers on the router, controller, or gateway that actually performs captive-portal authentication.

6

Test the customer path

Connect a new client, confirm it receives the correct address and DNS, verify internet or portal access, then power-cycle the AP and repeat the test.

Verify success

  • SSID and security persist after a power reboot.
  • Only the intended DHCP server answers clients.
  • The AP appears once under the correct branch.
  • Voucher enforcement is assigned to a capable gateway or controller.

Troubleshooting

The SSID returns to the factory name

Finish the vendor's initial setup and commit/apply the running configuration before rebooting. Check whether another AP or controller is overwriting the standalone configuration.

K7abeer does not show voucher controls

The device is operating as a standard AP and cannot enforce vouchers by itself. Select the upstream hotspot router or an authorized controller for voucher installation.
